Purpose of the ABVS:

The ABVS was formed to establish an independent ABMS- approved American Board of Vascular Surgery.

The ABVS also contributes to improving the delivery of care in the areas of vascular surgery and vascular disease management through public and professional education. The Board of Directors are actively pursuing the formation of an independent Board for Vascular Surgery.

Note that we do not provide information on Board certifications.  Please contact the American Board of Surgery.

Please feel free to contact our officers or Board members if you have any other questions.

Vascular Surgeons Take Back Your Specialty Today

Take Control

September 24, 2007: NOT HAVING AN INDEPENDENT BOARD IS AN URGENT PROBLEM FOR MOST VASCULAR SURGEONS AND THE SVS LEADERSHIP HAS WORKED AGAINST GETTING US THERE FAST ENOUGH. Read more and respond today! Your opinion counts. E-Mail your comments to news@abvs.org

September 14, 2007: The ABVS has been for the past 10 years the engine for change in the training programs for vascular surgeons. As a result of the ABVS initiatives, INDEPENDENCE for the specialty of Vascular Surgery has been added to the SVS's goals and the SVS nominating process has been modified somewhat.  However, these advances are not enough to clearly define our specialty.  True independence with approval of an autonomous Board becomes a mandate for our specialty's commitment to the care of non-cardiac vascular disease. June 2007

American Board of Vascular Surgery (ABVS) Board of Director’s met June 7, 2007 at the Renaissance Hotel (Baltimore, Maryland). It was attended by 29 ABVS Directors of the Board who are Society for Vascular Surgery (SVS) members, including six past presidents.

The meeting discussed in some detail the issue of independence and its impact on practicing vascular surgeons. The ABVS Board members reaffirmed their commitment to this principle and its supervision to insure ultimate success.

ABVS UNDERGOES NAME CHANGE
The ABVS Board members voted for a name change from The American Board of Vascular Surgery, Inc. to the American Board of Vascular Specialists, Inc. The basis for this decision was considered because vascular surgeons perform services in many areas other than Vascular Surgery alone (endovascular Surgery, vascular medicine and imaging). Altering the American public’s perception of our specialty and its range of treatment options is a major goal of this proposal.

ABVS CONSIDERS A MORE COMPREHENSIV EXAMINATION
The Directors of the ABVS are continuing to support exploratory talks on an examination that would cover vascular specialists. This four module examination would include open Vascular Surgery, endovascular surgery, elements of vascular medicine and imaging. If instituted, the first examinations would be open to applicants with knowledge in all four modules (vascular surgeons). In the future, and dependent on the Board’s recommendations, this could be expanded to include other specialties. An offer has been made to the SVS Board for collaboration on the examinations content and we await a final decision.

TIMELINES, ABVS
The ABVS is discussing timelines for these activities including the submission of an application to the American Board of Medical Specialists (ABMS). Final decisions have not been made, however, many Board members feel that submission of the application may occur as early as two (2) years from now (2009). We have requested on-going collaboration with the SVS Board through the SVS-ABVS Ad Hoc committee on identifying pathways for independence. Progress on this proposal has been slower than originally anticipated.
