Letter From Frank J. Veith, MD to Frank R. Lewis, MDFrom: Frank J. Veith, MD American Board of Vascular Surgery June 7, 2004 Frank R. Lewis, Jr., MD Dear Frank (Lewis): I just received your May 20, 2004 letter regarding the American Board of Vascular Surgery's request that the Directors of the American Board of Surgery formally consider supporting the application of the ABVS to the ABMS for independent board status. I was aware of the similar proposal considered in June 2001, and I was also aware of the unanimous decision of the Directors of the ABS not to support the development of a separate American Board of Vascular Surgery. However, almost all vascular surgeons and general surgeons acknowledge that many things have changed since 2001, and a consensus about these changes - at least amongst vascular surgeons - was made apparent by the discussion at the APDVS meeting in Bethesda in April 2004. It is these changes that prompt us to request that the Directors of the American Board of Surgery reconsider this issue. Although I do not have time to prepare extensive written material prior to your upcoming meeting of the VSB and the full Board of Directors of the ABS, I would appreciate your making them aware of two important facts. The first is that the Society for Vascular Surgery Board of Directors reaffirmed its commitment to supporting the ABVS in its efforts to create an independent certifying Board for Vascular Surgery by a 16 to 6 vote at their April 1, 2004 meeting. I appreciate your help with this matter. To facilitate more efficient communication, please direct correspondence to me at Montefiore Medical Center, 111 East 210th Street, Bronx, NY 10467. With warmest regards, Cordially,
From: Frank J. Veith, MD American Board of Vascular Surgery |
